Project summary - Public protection
Project name: Public Protection
MPA lead officer: Lynne Abrams
Met Forward work strand: Met Specialist
Project summary
This project is concerned with the successful delivery of effective and efficient monitoring and scrutiny of MPS activity around all forms of Public protection, with the exception of Counter-terrorism and hate crime.
The impact on public confidence following the cases of Baby Peter, Worboys, Reid and Sonnex is considerable in terms of the risk to the reputation of the MPS and MPA. The MPA must continue to work with the MPS to ensure that recommendations from the Laming report, as well as lessons learned from the above cases, are implemented and integrated into everyday practice.
Project objectives
- Ongoing and effective monitoring by the MPA of the MPS across the Public protection areas, as identified in Met Forward. These areas will include Violence against Women and rape (delivered through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Board), Child Protection, Safeguarding Adults (including mental health), MAPPA and associated areas of risk and vulnerability (e.g. missing persons).
- MPA Members should be satisfied that the continued process of monitoring Public protection activity at the MPS is robust and efficient.
- Public protection is represented across the relevant committee work plans.
Authority’s role to deliver work strand
The MPA will assess which committees currently look at which aspects of public protection to identify if there are any gaps in our oversight and scrutiny function that need to be addressed. The MPA will rigorously hold the commissioner to account for the performance of the MPS on issues relating to public protection (child protection, MAPPA and safeguarding adults) through the committee process.
What will success look like?
Short-term benefits
- scoping the MPA committee work plans to ensure Public Protection is represented at the relevant committee;
- assessment of how the MPS Communication Strategy and plan could best be used to support delivery and internal and external communications to MPS officers, communities and stakeholders.
Long term
- Ongoing and effective monitoring by the MPA of the MPS across the Public Protection Areas, as identified in Met Forward is ensured.
- The public are better informed about the police response in relation to the delivery of public protection services.
- MPA Members should be satisfied that the continued process of monitoring Public protection activity at the MPS is robust and efficient.
- Public protection to be fully integrated into the MPA committee process.
